Volkswagen (VW) Service & Repair

Volkswagen (VW) is a German automobile manufacturer founded in 1937. Volkswagen translated from German to English literally means “People’s Car”. The German Labour Front wanted a car that fit two adults and three children. For the average German at the time car ownership was just a luxury for the wealthy. Most vehicles were too expensive and luxurious to be practical for the typical German family. The German government at the time wanted the car to cost less than 990 Reichsmark (About $400 USD at the time). It was found to be difficult to get any existing car designs in this price point so Germany decided to design their own version of Ferdinand Porsche’s Type 12 design. It would be air cooled, cheap to produce and reliable. Ferdinand’s team helped design the body of the car that is instantly recognizable the the Volkswagen Beetle.

Post WWII saw the continuation of the Volkswagen Beetle, development of commercial trucks and the introduction of the sleek Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. In 1949 Volkswagen vehicles were available inside the United States but it wasn’t until 1955 that Volkswagen would setup a US based company to sell and market them aggressively. Over time US based vehicle emissions controls would become the downfall of air cooled engines. Air cooled engines are tuned to run rich in their fuel mixture and this made the engines produce larger amounts of pollutants. Eventually vehicles like the Passat, Scirocco and Golf would be introduced. The introduction of Volkswagen Golf marked the end of the Beetle production.
