Fiat is a well known Italian automobile manufacturer that was founded by Giovanni Agnelli in 1899. Fiat is short for Fabbrica Italiano Automobili Turino which means “Italian Automobile Factory”. By 1910 Fiat had became the biggest Italian car manufacturer.
Over the years Fiat has acquired many automobile companies by purchasing large amount of shares in them. Companies such as Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Ferrari, Maserati and Lancia are all owned by Fiat now. Interestingly had Chrysler held on to Lamborghini it would have became a Fiat owned brand!
The first vehicle produced by Fiat was called the Corso Dante. The Fiat Corso Dante was powered by a small 2-cylinder engine that put out 3.5Hp. The first Fiat automobiles looked more like a horseless cart than the vehicles we recognize today. Fiat later designed the Fiat 500 Topolino which means “little mouse” in Italian. The first mass produced Fiat was the Fiat 500 and it was the successor to the Topolino. The Fiat 500 was a very small yet economical car that measured in at about 10.5′ long by just over 4′ wide. A more modern version of the Fiat 500 is currently being produced. The new Fiat 500 is very similar to the classic design of the original Fiat 500.
