NH Auto Repair: Get Your Car Ready for Winter

Every New England driver knows that winter is different from other seasons. You not only have to drive differently due to the changing weather conditions, but you also have to take a different approach to your NH auto repair needs. At Silver Arrow Service, we pride ourselves on providing our customers with excellent service year-round, but especially in the winter months when the smallest changes can make a big difference.

Is your car ready for winter? Be prepared for anything with our NH winter auto repair checklist.

Check the Tires

If you use winter tires, check that they are still in good condition from last year. Because you only need them for a few months out of the year, they will last you a while, but the tread will eventually wear down. After you install them, check your tire pressure, and re-check it in particularly cold temperatures. If you stick with your all-season tires, make sure they have good tread depth at are properly inflated.

Check the Fluid Levels

You should keep an eye on your car’s fluid levels throughout the year, but low fluids can cause more severe issues in the winter. Check that your oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and washer fluid are all at the correct levels. You also want to ensure that your coolant is diluted enough. It should be 50/50 coolant and water so that the coolant doesn’t freeze and damage the engine.

Check the Battery

Your car battery can die in extreme cold, so check that it can hold a charge well. Car batteries typically last 3 to 5 years, so if yours is within or older than that window, you should think about replacing it. You should also carry a set of jumper cables in your car, just in case the battery dies and you need someone to give you a jump.

Check the Heater and Defroster

We’ve all had the experience of waking up on a cold morning knowing that it’s going to be a process getting the ice off the car. Make sure that your heater and defroster are in good working order so you can see clearly when driving in cold and icy conditions.
