Delorean DMC-12 Service & Repair

The Delorean DMC-12 is an iconic car popularized by the Back to the Future film trilogy. It’s design is instantly recognizable to this day even by people that are not even car enthusiasts! The Delorean DMC-12’s most notable features are it’s gull wing doors, paint-less brushed stainless steel body panels and Italian design by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Since the original founder of Delorean Motor Company John Delorean was 6’4″, the cars are roomy enough for taller automotive enthusiasts. The DMC-12 was manufactured from 1981-1982 in Dunmurry, Ireland. Some vehicles made in 1982 were sold as 1983 models. The DMC-12 had a MSRP of over $25,000 when it was first introduced to the US market. Around 9,000 Delorean DMC-12 units were produced in it’s short run. Sadly the company declared bankruptcy in 1982 and production ended. Today about 6,500 units are still on the roads. The Delorean brand was resurrected recently offering restored cars and cars built from original parts.

The engine in the original Delorean DMC-12 is powered by a V6 PRV Engine, something we are experienced with at Silver Arrow Service. The PRV engine was a joint venture between Peugeot, Renault and Volvo from 1974 – 1998. This engine was the subject of harsh criticism at the time because it was considered under powered for such an expensive automobile at the time. To overcome the PRV engine’s lack of power some owners have swapped out engines for other engines or even installed twin turbos as a solution. When you own one of these iconic cars you want to make sure the shop you bring it to is knowledgeable on it’s unique service and repair requirements.
